Contact Lens Care Products
These are usually a multipurpose solution that stores, disinfects and cleans the contact lenses. Storage solutions are used to maintain the physical characteristics of soft contact lenses during storage. They are also used to rinse off the contact lens surface after the cleaning process to remove any loosened contaminants and cleaning solution. If a soft contact lens is allowed to dry out and is then re-wetted, provided that no damage has occurred to the contact lens, it will rehydrate well. In fact many soft contact lenses are manufactured in the dry state and then hydrated. Disinfectants prevent infection by significantly reducing the number of "bugs" present on the contact lens such as bacteria and fungi. The contact lenses are soaked in a specially designed chemical disinfection solution usually overnight to ensure absolute disinfection even though the eye has a very good natural defence against contamination. In most cases the same solution is used for storage and disinfection.
